DORK ONLINE REVIEW

Rogue Cinema just did a review of THE DORK OF THE RINGS for their November issue of their website. Rogue Cinema covers the independent/cult/low budget film scene with articles, reviews, interviews and more. I think it was an honest review and he had a lot of fun watching it and was very impressed with its scope.

Our screenings went awesome. Thanks to everyone who came out. We have a lot of photos and videos to put on the website from all our events so keep checking back for possible updates. You can read Jack's blog right now to hear a bit about the IUSB shows and see a few pics.

DRAGON*CON 2006 REPORT

Our 1 a.m. screening of the movie was packed on Saturday night at Dragon*Con, the country's largest Sci-fi/horror/fantasy/popculture/whatever convention in the country.
We were part of two event tracks there: the independent film track and the Tolkien track (for which we were special guests).

Randolf the Wizard worked the lobbies all weekend and had a clicker he used to keep track of how many times his picture was taken which turned out to be over 1,400! He also did a number of interviews for TV, radio, print and a Dragon*Con documentary.

Our two Making of Muddle-earth panels went great and we got to do a panel with actor Kiran Shah Monday morning talking about our experiences making films. Kiran and his nephew Kit were a pleasure to hang out with and it looks like Kiran may be interested in our next project, which just might involve a boy wizard and a dopey magic school or something. You may remember that Kiran was in LORD OF THE RINGS as the stunt/scale double for the hobbits and played the sleigh driver for the White Queen in CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. He also introduces our movie on the Dork DVD.

Naturally, Jack Peterson was there and he wedged his way into the above-mentioned panel and sat right next to Kiran, even offering his bathtub for Kiran to stay in next time he visits New Zealand. Jack shmoozed with other celebs including legendary filmmaker George Lucas (played by George Starkey), David Prowse (the real Darth Vader!), Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer of The Venture Bros. (Jack pissed off Doc, no surprise), and the wacky guys behind the online hit Red. Vs.
Blue.

Thanks again to Ashlee and Rachel Scott for filming some stuff for us (and we filmed for them too!) and The Great Luke Ski and Terrestrial Media for selling our DVDs at their booths.

Be sure to check out the Dragon*Con video!

BIG DORKS AT IMAX

Our IMAX screening went very well and we sold some DVDs, which is always nice. We also got a cut from ticket sales, which turned out to be pretty damn good! Once again, Jack hogged most of the spotlight and we'll have his video report on the website this fall.

PLAY "WHACK-A-DORK!"

Our webmaster obviously has some kind of free time on his hands (though he claims it was a class assignment) and created a cool Dork game you can play right on our website so check it out!

DORK ON MYSPACE AND NEW DORK TRAILERS

Visit our new site on MySpace. It has screenings listed on it and right now it's the only place you can watch our two new trailers edited by fellow filmmaker Brett Fountain. So join our friends list today! You can also join Jack Peterson's friends list.

OWN THE MOVIE YET?

So what are ya waiting for? Buy the 2-disc DVD set!

SPECIAL THANKS TO RANDOLF THE WIZARD

We definitely appreciate the support and sacrifices of everyone on our Dork team, but I wanted to take a moment to especially thank our devoted wizard, Dave Kiefer. Of our 15 event appearances over the last several years, Dave has attended 11 of them. He's gone out of the state with us as well to Seattle, Pasadena and Atlanta. He's never out of costume and always happy to greet folks and smile at the children.

While he may seem old enough to be retired with time on his hands, he's not retired at all and isn't actually that old either, and in fact works full time. He's willingly taken off time from work and journeyed with us mostly at his own expense. His appearances at conventions has been invaluable to the promotion of the movie and he's single-handedly responsible for handing out over several thousand Dork business cards.

Dave, on behalf of myself and every dork in this production, we thank you for your dedicated service. You're a pleasure to have around and we truly appreciate all that you do. Thanks for all your "magic."

DRAGON*CON SCREENING AND SEMINARS

Four of us will be attending Dragon*Con (www.dragoncon.org) over Labor Day weekend for our southern fried premiere at Dragon*Con. Me, Ian (Art Coordinator), David (Randolf) and Michael (writer/producer).

You can see our seminars and other Tolkien tracks here. Jean, the Tolkien track organizer, says we'll be located in the Consulate in the Mariott.

The fan films and parody block of the film festival starts Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. so DOTR should screen at around 1:00 a.m. I'm told this is still a decent time for a con that never sleeps. .It takes place in the Hyatt - Learning Center (that's the Film Festival room). Our film description is on the features page of the web site here.

Our times for "Making of Muddle-earth" are Saturday at 4:00 p.m. & Monday at 1:00 p.m. They've also invited us to do an additional seminar with Kiran Shah at 12:00 p.m. on Monday.

GENCON 2006 REPORT EXCERPT

This was it. All the sweat, toil, and (minimal) bloodshed over the last several years came to fruition as Richardson Productions held its world premiere and multiple screenings of the epic parody "The Dork of the Rings" at GenCon '06, the country's largest gaming convention with fantasy and sci-fi geeks from around the world in attendance.

Thursday's sneak preview was jam-packed with squished standing room only. A very enthusiastic film reviewer from Silven was present, as well as a representative of the Indiana State Museum who wants the film to be screened at the museum. Both the Friday premiere and Saturday screening were completely filled, so that meant about 200 eager dorks per screening. After the premiere the cast and crew answered lots of questions and signed autographs for all their adoring dorker fans.

Somehow (no one is claiming responsibility), our infamous co-director Jack Peterson made the scene at the end of the premiere and amazed the crowd with his total lack of knowledge about basically everything.

For the full report click here.

THE GREAT LUKE SKI RECORDS "DORK" THEME SONG

Comedy phenomenon The Great Luke Ski has recorded "The Theme Song From The Dork of the Rings." Luke has been the #1 requested artist for the past 6 years on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show. We shot a music video for the theme song and some of our Dork cast and crew helped shoot Luke's "Stealin' Like A Hobbit" video. The video will appear on his DVD to be released at GenCon this year. We'll be doing a lot of cross-promoting with Luke and we're thrilled to have him on board. You can check out his comedy movie website at www.lukeski.com.

HOLLYWOOD ACTOR JUSTIN LONG JOINS "DORKERS"

Co-director Jack Peterson caught up with dorky actor Justin Long (GALAXY QUEST, JEEPERS CREEPERS) at the Waterfront Film Festival. He interviewed Justin who was instantly enamored with his fuzzy beard…and rightly so. Justin pimped the film and will appear in our DORKERS dorkumentary which screens at The Gathering of the Fellowship and Elf 2 this summer and will be on the final DORK movie DVD.

We'll let everyone know if the premiere time changes for any reason via our website and newsletters.

LOTR ACTOR KIRAN SHAH VIDEO ARRIVES

We now have the footage of LORD OF THE RINGS actor/scale double Kiran Shah, filmed by his nephew Kit. Kiran was gracious enough to do a funny introduction for us to precede the film and he also did some amusing bits for our DORKERS documentary. A very special thanks to Kit and Kiran for being a part of our exciting project. Kiran will be appearing next at The Gathering of the Fellowship in Toronto this July and Dragon*Con in Atlanta in September.

DORKERS SUPPORT DORK!

We thank each and every one of you reading this for following our project and supporting our efforts. We are now in the final push for the film's release this August and could definitely use a financial boost to help us with GenCon and distributing expenses. So if you haven't bought a Dork t-shirt or ordered a copy of DORKS GONE WILD! We hope that'll you'll consider doing so now. The shirts are a limited time design and about half of the content on DORKS GONE WILD! will not be included on the final DORK OF THE RINGS DVD. KIRAN SHAH FILMING

LORD OF THE RINGS actor/scale double Kiran Shah is being taped in England this week for interview bits to go in our DORKERS documentary.

He is also doing an introduction that will appear before the DORK OF THE RINGS feature. We are very honored and excited to have him on board as a loyal Dorker.

DORKS AT BUY ME TOYS STORE

We got some great filming done for DORKERS at the local collectible and comic book store Buy Me Toys, despite the thin crowd. Must've been the big shoe sale next door. A special thanks to the cast and crew who showed up to help out: Bryce (Frudo), David (Randolf), Jason (artist), Andy (costumer), Trish (production princess), Michael (writer/producer), Jim (cinematographer) and Ian (art coordinator).

FAN FILM COMPETITION UPDATE

So far there are six filmmakers (that we know up) creating fan films for our DORK FAN FILM CONTEST and it's not too late to enter with the deadline being May 25. We don't want to show any favoritism, but Mars Productions shared with us some still from their fan film shoot that you can check out on their website at www.marsproductions.net. They are displayed on the last few pages of their photo gallery.

Good luck to all our creative fan filmmakers! Also, please check out the updates regarding the fan film rules.

Basically, we stated that no copyrighted video, audio or music can be used in the fan films. However, you are welcome to use anything found on our website (including video, etc).

POST-PRODUCTION UPDATE

Well, we have three months to finish this bad boy up before August 1 so it will be ready for GenCon. We are giving another call out here for anyone that wants to help with the film in some way. Below are the positions needed and brief descriptions. We will reply with more detailed info to anyone who contacts us at dork@rpstudios.net.

GRAPHICS ARTISTS/ILLUSTRATORS
We need artists to create original poster art, create graphics and images for within the film and for our DORKERS documentary, and other publicity materials.

In the November/December issue of Indiana Alumni Magazine (which goes out all across the country) there is a glowing review of our film as represented by our website. A few excerpts from the review:

“Here is one spoof to rule them all.”

“’Dork’ is full of laughs and nearly makes as good a website as it does a film.”

“… Richardson has created an admirable send-up on such a small budget, further establishing South Bend as the state’s little Hollywood.”

Wow, and the film’s not even done yet!

SHMOOZING WITH WOOD & ASTIN

We just got back from Orlando where we attended Elf: Weekend of Wonder with over 1,000 LOTR fans. Lots of people stopped by our booth where we had clips from the film running and Legoblocks made the rounds handing out cards and Sarah donned the infamous Nosedrool costume. Our panel presentation on Sunday went awesome, apart from a few technical difficulties, which were saved by co-director Jack Peterson’s wit.

Tim got to meet Sean Astin and plugged the film but the biggest contact was surprisingly made by our very own Jack Peterson who showed up out of the blue on Sunday, stood in a long ass photo op line, and then got his picture take with Elijah Wood himself! Elijah laughed and told him “Nice costume,” but little did he know Jack was 100% authentic. Jack told him about the film, gave him his business card, and asked him if he’d wash his car.

GENCON: WHERE TRUE DORKS RESIDE

The weekend before, a bunch of us trekked down to our very own Indy for Gen Con, a huge gaming convention with over 25,000. We handed out cards like mad and Jim (Arrogant) even gave a card to Jared the Subway guy as he passed through the convention center on his way to the Colts game. Our two panel sessions were well attended and everyone was enthusiastic and had great questions. Like why the hell we are making this thing.

The crowning moment was when David won Staff Choice Award in the annual costume contest. He didn’t place in his own category (Fantasy Characters) but won the staff’s love out of all the contestants with his costume and delightful monologue (which shamelessly promoted the film to the 1,000 audience members). Janice and David split the $50 prize and got themselves a decent meal I imagine.
