Joe plays Mike, the squinty-eyed, doughy asparagus gardener and neighbor to the Briars.  He'll do anything he can to try to get back his beloved bike (or what he thinks is his bike) from Bryce.  It didn't occur to him that he has never owned a bike, never learned to ride a bike, and couldn't ever even balance on one because of his lack of depth-perception and off-kilter center.
